Foundations — Abiding in Christ

Love One Another

John 13:1–35

About This Message

On the night before He died, Jesus knelt and washed His disciples' feet — including Judas. Then He gave a new command: love one another as I have loved you. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples. Not your theology. Not your programs. Your love for one another.

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
John 13:35

Key Points

  1. 1

Jesus knew the hour had come — and He spent it washing feet. Leadership in the Kingdom is service.

  2. 2

Peter resisted: "You will never wash my feet." Jesus said, "Unless I wash you, you have no part in me."

  3. 3

Judas was in the room. Jesus washed his feet too. That's the love we're called to.

  4. 4

A new command — not just love your neighbour, but love as I have loved you. The standard is the cross.

  5. 5

The mark of the church is not eloquent preaching or slick programs. It is love that costs something.
